Do I Need Amino Acids In My Shampoo, And What Is It Exactly?

We delve behind the science of amino acids. Often an ingredient that garners positive response, it is prevalent in most beauty products for its rejuvenating benefits. Its use stretches beyond haircare, into skin and overall beauty care, and this is why.

What are amino acids?

To fully comprehend the benefits of amino acids, one must first understand its composition. Amino acids are organic compounds that are fundamental building blocks of proteins. It is produced by, and resides naturally in our bodies, including our hair and skin. Of the many that exists and are classified as essential (where the body can’t produce on its own and must be obtained through dietary sources) and non-essential (where the body synthesises on its own), there are few that play a key role in the production of keratin—the protein that makes up the structure of hair strands. These amino acids are namely, methionine, cysteine, lysine, arginine and tyrosine.

What are the benefits of amino acids for hair?

Together, these various amino acids facilitate the synthesis of keratin, and ultimately supports hair growth. From maintaining the structural integrity of hair shafts, to relaxing blood vessels and improving circulation to the scalp, amino acids have the ability to strengthen, repair, moisturise, hydrate, enhance hair textures and repair damage from chemical treatments.

Are amino acids included in the kimrobinson haircare collection?

Yes, they are. Amino acids have been specially included in the HRF range to improve Asian hair health. In the HRF Scalp Cleansing Bio-Treatment and HRF Vitamin Plus Conditioning Treatment, silk amino acids protect hair from loss of moisture and the conditions to provide a silky finish after each wash. Simultaneously, ingredients such as copper peptide reverse the natural ageing process of the hair for a rejuvenating look and feel, while safflower oil soothes the scalp and nourishes hair follicles directly with vitamin E.

Unlike silicon, amino acids actually do benefit the structure of the hair, and has been proven as a great ingredient across all types of beauty products.
